Respecting every identity
LGBT-specific legal support that makes a difference
Changes to the law now mean that same-sex relationships are recognised on an equal footing to heterosexual relationships - it's about time! In light of this, we provide legal advice to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples and individuals, helping them overcome any obstacles that may arise.
The law doesn’t always reflect the lived realities of LGBT individuals and families. From outdated assumptions to inconsistent recognition of rights, navigating legal systems can feel alienating or even discriminatory. That’s why our team is committed to offering informed, inclusive legal advice that honours your identity and your lived experience.
Inclusive legal support
Legal protection for unmarried couples
Many couples believe living together for years gives them the same legal rights as marriage or a civil partnership. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Without the right legal protections in place, disagreements over property or inheritance can become difficult to resolve later.
At Brockbanks Solicitors, we provide practical, straightforward same sex couple legal advice tailored to your circumstances. Whether you are buying a property together or separating after a long-term relationship, our experienced team can help you understand your legal position clearly. We can help you plan for the future, both for yourself and your partner.
For couples purchasing property together, it is important to understand how ownership arrangements work. Choosing between joint tenants and tenants in common can affect what happens to your share of the property in the future. Having the right agreements prepared early can help avoid uncertainty and protect both parties financially. Our team can explain each option to you and help you choose the legal path that fits your situation best.
With offices across Carlisle, Whitehaven, Workington, Cockermouth, and Keswick, Brockbanks Solicitors offers accessible legal support for individuals and families throughout Cumbria.

Planning for the future
Planning ahead with a professionally drafted will
Many unmarried couples are surprised to learn that partners may not automatically inherit from each other if one person passes away without a valid will. This can add to the stress of loved ones during an already emotional time.
This is why will writing is an important part of future planning. A professionally prepared will helps ensure your wishes are clearly recorded, and your estate is passed on to the people you choose.
As solicitors experienced in LGBT family law, Brockbanks Solicitors can help clients put the right legal arrangements in place while providing advice in a supportive and respectful environment. Planning ahead is not only about inheritance. Lasting powers of attorney can also help protect your future by allowing somebody you trust to make important decisions on your behalf if you become unable to do so yourself.

Experts in the legal elements
Need to discuss a Civil Partnership?
It became possible for two people of the same-sex to enter into a civil partnership in the UK on 5th December 2005. Following the enactment of the Marriage (same-sex couples) Act 2013, same sex weddings have been taking place since 29th March 2014, meaning a Civil Partnership can now be converted into a marriage. If your Civil Partnership breaks down, we can support you with an application to dissolve the partnership, a procedure that's very similar to that of divorce.
To discuss this in more detail, contact Brockbanks Solicitors directly, or visit one of our offices in Cumbria, including Whitehaven, Cockermouth, Workington, Carlisle and Keswick.
